Americans to blame for my latest problem.

    in General Discussions

On Monday my granddaughter has her school Prom, in my days these Prom things were only celebrated by Americans, but they have now slipped into British culture. She ordered an evening gown from the internet, but on Friday was informed they were unable to deliver it on time. It came from China (that's another story where I feel they are using "slave" labour) and had been addressed incorrectly. So Dot comes to the rescue, and with granddad's money makes a mercy dash to a not so nearby boutique to buy her a new dress which cost me the price of four pairs of jeans. Don't begrudge a penny of it, as she has worked hard this term and always appreciates any help we give. I also noticed that on her school's Twitter page, someone had used one of my GIFs, so I left a message saying thank-you and who I was

The dress looks great! They have to wear uniforms in school? There are some schools here that do that, but most do not. I'd prefer to allow kids to be themselves rather than making them all look the same.

@Craig Long - It's kind of funny to see someone older than me say that. I did not think of a 17 year old as a kid when I was in my early to mid 20s. However, I do now.

They wear uniforms, a maroon blazer and grey skirt which has to be at a certain height above the knees. She has finished year 11 and next term if they have attained the correct qualifications they are allowed to wear their own clothes

In her heels she was taller than me, and I'm just short of 6 foot

@Craig Long She used to be a Tomboy and in her early years used to live with us. We had converted the garage into a room for my daughter when she split with her partner. Every day when I got home from work, my granddaughter would hide from me, and it was my job to find her. It's amazing how fast they grow up..

@Dave Sutton - Definitely! My son just turned 17 earlier this month. Seems like he was 10 yesterday. Sadly, we don't get along all that well. Personality conflict. Though becoming a teen didn't help, the problem goes further back.

Grandparents to the rescue. So nice!

I thought she was just a little kid? Many years ago here they didn't have proms until high school and it was the Senior Prom.

@David Lazarus Yes she certainly was? or is? Is she still alive? If people marry early you can have many great grandparents still living.

@Craig Long - No, she passed in March of 2018. I never knew my great grandparents on either side.

So, mainland Europe has had Night of the Proms since the 80s and Britain is only just now catching up?

Where's a pic of her in her dress? Being that this is a small, private forum, it shouldn't be a big deal to post it. She'll probably plaster her pic all over FB anyway.

My children never had Proms and neither did I, but my granddaughter will, she is nearly17. What I do find strange is that it is an all-girls school, so no boys allowed. Welcome to Invicta Grammar School (viat.org.uk) I have not got photos yet, but she is coming round my house today to have her makeup done by a professional friend of my daughter as the Prom is today

@Dave Sutton She is growing up fast. Didn't know she was 17 already and in high school.
